NOI Philharmonic: Alsop Conducts Mahler’s “Titan”

7:30PM
Marin Alsop.

Location: Dekelboum Concert Hall, The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center

NOI+F goes big with the return of their Music Director Marin Alsop as she helms Gustav Mahler's 19th-century monumental Symphony No. 1 in D Major. Popularly known as "Titan," Mahler's triumphant inaugural attempt at the symphonic form features anachronistically comprehensive orchestration, expansive movements and an array of era-spanning thematic ideation. Who better to lead the orchestra on this journey than NOI+F Music Director Marin Alsop? A MacArthur Fellowship and Koussevitzky Prize Awardee renowned for her trailblazing career as the first woman appointed to lead a major orchestra, Alsop's love of education and devotion to fostering the next generation of female conductors has made her a central figure in today’s orchestral landscape. Taki Alsop Conducting Fellow Julia Cruz joins the podium to conduct the opening piece, the lively and percussive Antrópolis by Mexican composer Gabriela Ortiz, who is teaching as part of this year's NOI+F Composition Academy. Maestra Alsop will present the Mahler symphony later this year at the prestigious Ravinia Festival with the NOI Philharmonic, but you can hear it at The Clarice first!

This event is part of the 2024 The National Orchestral Institute + Festival.
