Location: The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, Gildenhorn Recital Hall
Acknowledged as one of the great American composers and pianists, Conrad Tao's collaboration with the outstanding tap dancer Caleb Teicher presents audiences with a uniquely fresh and deeply vital exploration of percussion's transcendent joys of sound and impact. Through dance and music, the duo uncover fresh perspectives with exciting harmonic, rhythmic and theatrical traditions linking each other's practices across disciplines and eras. As heard on NPR Music's Tiny Desk Concert, the stylistically diverse inspirations of Counterpoint include Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, the Aria from Bach’s Goldberg Variations, the spirit of Art Tatum’s manic stride piano, Arnold Schoenberg’s ironic take on the Viennese waltz, original works by Tao, and Teicher’s Bessie Award-winning composition for tap and keys, More Forever. Counterpoint is a one-of-a-kind project—part dance, part piano recital and part vaudeville—that demands to be experienced live!
